Houndshow Championship Show 2019 Critique

A few observations for your interest. Some of the hounds lacked physical condition and were overweight which affected movement and shape. I feel the hounds would benefit from more robust exercise which will improve the general movement and health of the breed.  Attention needs to be paid to teeth as I found some very dirty ones,  but this does not apply to any of my winners.  Thank you to everyone who turned out, I really enjoyed by day, I was sorry we could not show outside as our hounds always perform better on grass. I was assured this will not happen next year.

Class PUPPY DOG  (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st:  BARTER's  Ehlaradawn Feanor
10 months old and somewhat raw. Good lay of shoulder, strong bone with a good slope in pasterns.  tight feet, Well muscled but lacking read angulation at the moment which is certainly due to his age. Sound on the move. Very promising young hound.

2nd: NUTTALL's  Flaxside A Will To Live
8 month old pup who was not on his best behaviour so hard to assess.  Beautiful head, neat well set ears, dark eye and lovely dark coat. Did not appear to have the bone and substance of no 1 yet.

Class JUNIOR DOG  (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: BARTER's  Ehlaradawn Duir
Standing alone and not cooperating with handler. Pleasing profile balanced front and rear but tended to flatten in topline on the move, Feet were well knuckled and movement can improve with age.

Class YEARLING DOG  (3 Entries) Abs: 0

Three very promising hounds and on another day could change places.

1st: GRIMSHAW's  Greyflax Diamond Joe At Jamalison
Very mature for his age, beautiful head and expression, well boned Deerhound with a good  front assembly and balanced rear. Moved well in profile slightly close in rear movement and could be in harder condition. Close decision on No 1 and 2 . Res CC

2nd: 967 FAIRCLOTH Mrs L & Mr J Beardswood Uther
Another mature hound who pushed the winner hard. Slightly long not the curves of No 1 but well constructed and the better mover on the day  but I preferred No 1 for Type.

3rd:  ASTON's  Balgaled Arlan

Class SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (1 Entries) Abs: 1

Class  POST GRADUATE DOG  (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: SWANSON's  Cotherstone Dallas Dhu Of Altimarlach
Smaller hound with a dark coat, nice head and expression shoulder well laid, Very good condition Nice well knuckled feet best mover in this class.

2nd: CARLIN's  Kaleginy Fusilier At Thorsmoor
Much the same applies, good conformation and in hard condition good movement but I felt No 1 had the edge.

3rd: MACBEAN's  Kaleginy Plaid
Res: SAMWAYS's  Erpingham Magnus Cassacre

Class LIMIT DOG  (5 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: ADAMS'  Ardneish Pinochio

I liked the type of this dog smaller than I would prefer but fits the standard. Correct construction throughout , Sound on the move keeping his topline , pleasing head and expression nice shoulders and angles behind. Just would like a little more of him.

2nd: CUMMINGS'  Killoeter Tam Dubh
Opposite of No 1 but also fits the standard. Very sound on the move but tends to ring his tail. Well constructed balanced front and rear. Too heavily built for my taste WOULD BENEFIT FROM LOSING A FEW POUNDS. .

3rd: TROTMAN'S Stainlonan Pageant Of Penherald

Res: SMITH'S  Hyndsight Timespace At Julam

VHC: STUART/HOLT'S Ollandsheart Abraham

Class  OPEN DOG  (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st:  GIRLING'S  Pyefleet Tarka

Excellent hound in hard fit condition and certainly had the best movement on the day.  Masculine but pleasing head neat ears very strong neck well constructed front with a good lay of shoulder. Good strong bone , nice spring of rib and correct topline leading to a well angled rear. Just a pity you could not easily see it, only feel it,  he would certainly benefit from loosing some coat, however very worthy of the CC.

2nd: BAUMANN/LUCAS'  Packway Loxley Norton
A Bigger rangy hound well handled and presented.  strong in the neck and well boned with a good topline I just preferred the outline and the movement of the winner.

3rd: SHANNON's  Erewhon Celestial Fire

Class SPECIAL LURE COURSING NO ENTRIES

Class VETERAN DOG  NO ENTRIES

Class PUPPY BITCH  (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: BARTER'S Ehlaradawn Idril
10 month old sister to the dog puppy winner this bitch caught my eye. Well grown with nice bone and size. Good coat,  strong in neck and correct construction front and rear. A difficult age for puppies and took a little while to settle but I was pleased to watch her take group 4 in the big ring. BEST PUPPY

2nd: NUTTALL'S  Flaxside Against All Odds
A younger puppy not the maturity of the winner. Nice head with dark eye, neat ears tight feet and her movement was quite good when she eventually settled.

Class 261 JUNIOR BITCH  (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st:  TROTMAN Ehlaradawn Ailm Of Penherald
Big hound with a nice  head and excellent bone and nice coat. Topline flattens on the move but may improve with age. Movement OK in profile but a little close behind

Quality bitch on the large size very powerfully built and presented in good hard condition.   Nice bone with strong well knuckled feet.  Moved very well in profile and quite sound. Res CC

2nd: BAILEY'S  Greyflax Pearls A Singer

Close decision and challenged hard for 1st place. More my type of hound, well constructed with a lovely head and expression , nice topline and angles front and aft. I just preferred the overall fitness and movement of the winner.

Novice handler this bitch had appeared in the previous class and was not placed due to the fact I could not assess her, However in this class she had settled and I saw a different dog. Well constructed front and rear with a good lay of shoulder and topline.   Pleased to award her Best Special Beginner.

Class LIMIT BITCH  (9 Entries) Abs: 4
1st:  HELPS'  Beardswood Unique Gem
Large well proportioned hound,  best movement in class and a extremely fit girl which won her the class. Would prefer a softer head and expression and little less rise over the loin.

2nd: BAILEY'S  Greyflax Ruby Tuesday
More my type of hound overall, lovely head and expression, strong in neck but not quite the movement of the winner. Good angles in the rear moved well in profile.

3rd: SWANSON'S  Mr I R & Mrs L Cotherstone Brogue Of Altimarlach Sh.CM

Res:  LEWIS'  Neroche Juniper To Luckhurst

VHC:  BARTER'S  Winterpick Thistle at Ehlaradawn

A show girl from tip to toe – sound well constructed lovely head neat ears , good topline and rear angles, moved out with drive and covered the ground well,  she was a easy winner of this class and I was happy to give her the CC AND BOB

2nd: LUCAS/DARGONNE  Packway Little Loxley
Nicely put together and constructed well, balanced and was unfortunate to meet the winner today.
